Google Images Changes Done in January 2013 are Not Ethical

Google Images has made changes to Image Search and has stopped showing the source page.

Google Images is not sending visitors to publisher website anymore. This is resulting in traffic loss for many webmasters.

And, this is not ethical. It is simply stealing of images. Google Images is taking full resolution images from publisher websites and showing on their own network.

Just placing a small link to image doesn't serve the purpose. This is purely stealing images without asking the website publishers.

Google should stop this practice or it should provide option for webmasters to opt out in webmaster tools.

Maybe, Google Employees should consult someone from their own law department to seek answer if this doesn't call for a lawsuit.

As per my opinion, this can be challenged in the court. They simply can't copy images from all over the web and show them on their network.

If someone hasn't blocked Google, doesn't mean that those people have allowed Google to steal their images.

If Google has to steal images, they should ask for permission of every website they are planning to steal from.

I get lots of emails from people, who want to use 1-2 images from our websites for their presentation or for some print magazine. It is our choice to allow them or disallow them or charge them for using the image.

Google is copying all our images and hotlinking them and doesn't want to send us a visitor as well.

I guess Google Images and Google Search team understands that most web publishers hate and block hotlinking !!

Also, Google is hotlinking the images, thus using the webmaster's server resources = bandwidth theft. The new image search is a combination of copyright violation and theft of other people's server resources!
Google should be ashamed, deeply ashamed. Stealing to content of millions of webmasters and on top of that making their websites slower because Google is using (=stealing) a part of their server power!

As per my view, Google should ask webmasters by sending them a message in webmaster tools if they can steal their images like this.

That is the only way, Larry Page and Google Team can stick to their policy "Don't be Evil"

If you want to get on google nerves, then add
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} .google. [NC,OR]
RewriteRule \.(gif|jpg)$ - [F]

to your htaccess, then on google image there will be empty spots in there google image search, just the box is shown, but no image and when clicking nothing happens.

Hello, Reinhold here from Germany

Well what can i say..my website about video game related art made mostly by fans was at 3200 visitors until last friday when it sunk and sunk. Yesterday to around 1700 and today below 1000 it seems.

Thanks a lot google for keeping away visitors from a non profit site where links were leading to the artists behind the images.

The average google user now sees the artworks in fullsize and stays on google. If this continues i cant even pay the server costs through the few ads i placed there anymore.

Well done google, the biggest copyright infringement company ever.

They even do this worse by saying they have tested this and said the websites gets more visitors, its just ridiculous. Every time they open there mouth Its like listening to a dictator speaking about harmony and everything is great.

That is complete lie that web publisher would get more visitors. Google should publish the details of their findings here.

If Google can find even a single web publisher telling that he is getting more traffic by this, i would like to see them posting their data here!!

I have lost about 30% of visitors, but I am resigned to the fact that Google don't give a s**t.
Its a very mean move and can only hurt webmasters...the lifeblood of Googles business

Hey everyone - I like you have lost a ton of traffic in the last few days -40% down. So that being said you can still go to the publisher's original site by clicking on the "visit page" link. I know that this is a extra step for most users and they will not click on your website. This is very painful and will hurt.

My traffic is down 50% and still falling. This is not a search engine, it's a website circumvention tool. How is it legal for Google to allow people to download my content without ever visiting my site?

I think our only hope is that so many sites that host Google ads will be damaged by this that Google itself will see a loss of revenue. Otherwise, I think a lot of us will be put out of business by this move.

I've also lost around 20% of my traffic with this stupid update. I might consider blocking Google from indexing my images - If we don't have any privileges with OUR images, I don't see why they should appear in Google for their profit..

I've also lost around half of my visitors coming from google images. This move was obviously  detrimental to the majority of publishers and if you follow the forum posts focused on the end user you will see that the change is being rejected by them also.

The best part is yet to come! I bet they will use that zoomed canvas to show some ads. Our great pictures will help sell the competition products. How about that?
